Pharmacology - Risperidone
Antipsychotic medication. Able to effectively combat both positive and negative symptoms of schizophrenia. Method of Operation The compound is a powerful antagonist of alpha-1 adrenoceptors, as well as D2 and 5HT2A receptors. It is possible that a combination of D2 and 5HT2A antagonism is significant in changing activity in the mesolimbic and mesocortical pathways. This is similar to the situation with other atypical drugs. It is both oral and i.m. depot administration. Hepatic P450 metabolism is being discussed.3–20 hours is the half life. The active metabolite has a longer duration of action. Use in Clinical Settings Both schizophrenia and other psychotic conditions are included. During the manic phase of bipolar illness. Adverse Effects an increased EPS (in comparison to other atypicals). Sedation and sleeplessness are both symptoms. A feeling of unease. Insufficiency of prolactin. Put on some weight. Hypotension is the condition.
