Pharmacology - Thiopental
Treatment with Thiopental
ultra-short-acting anesthetics are used. Only a mild analgesic effect is seen in all of them.

Method of Operation
This compound binds to a specific location on the GABAA receptor, which is distinct from the benzodiazepine binding site, in order to increase the opening of the intrinsic Cl- channel by GABA. When the concentration is higher, the receptor is immediately activated.

IV injections are administered. Extremely lipid-soluble, which enables quick entry into the central nervous system. Rapid onset (in twenty seconds) and brief duration of action (five to ten minutes). This is because of the quick redistribution that occurs throughout the body, particularly in the muscle. Because of its slow metabolism (half life of 8–10 hours), thiopental has the potential to cause a "hangover." The fact that propofol is quickly metabolized and does not cause a hangover makes it an excellent choice for daytime surgery. Half life of etomidate is two hours.

Use in Clinical Settings
Anesthesia for treatments that are relatively brief, as well as the induction of anesthesia for subsequent maintenance with volatile medicines.

Effects That Are Bad
When etomidate is used, the cardiorespiratory depression is reduced. Adrenocortical suppression with etomidate and post-operative vomiting are also possible outcomes.
