Articulation is the production of speech sounds by shaping and modifying an airstream—usually air pushed out from the lungs—using the organs of speech (such as the tongue, lips, teeth, palate, and laryngeal structures). In phonetics, consonants are classified mainly according to place of articulation (where constriction occurs) and manner of articulation (how the constriction is formed and released). The term traces back to Latin words relating to joints and “jointing” or forming segments.
