Astrocytes are large star-shaped glial cells that help maintain brain structure, regulate extracellular potassium during intense neural firing, recycle neurotransmitters such as glutamate and GABA after release, and act as phagocytes that clear cellular debris; they may also contribute to the blood–brain barrier by surrounding capillaries with terminal dendritic structures. They are also called astroglia and relate to gliosis; the name comes from Greek for “star” and “cell/vessel.”
