An audiogyral illusion is a sound-localization error where a sound fixed relative to the head (for example on a boom a few feet in front of the nose) is nevertheless perceived as coming from directly overhead when the head turns, and similar overhead mislocalizations occur when a person rotates on a platform with the sound rotating with them, or when vection is induced by a rotating striped drum while a sound source remains fixed outside. The illusion was discovered by Hans Wallach (1904–98) and published in 1940, and it is explained because head/body rotation normally changes transient disparities, phase delays, and sonic shadows except for sources directly above or below; terrestrial experience therefore biases interpretation toward an overhead source. It is compared with the audiogravic illusion and relates to sound localization.
