An auditory beat is a rhythmic waxing and waning in loudness produced when two tones with slightly different frequencies are played together, due to wave interference that alternately reinforces and cancels amplitude; for instance, 256 Hz played with 260 Hz produces a 4 Hz beat, and piano tuners use beat counting. Beats can also occur when the tones are presented separately to each ear (binaural beats).
