Auditory cortex includes primary auditory cortex and auditory association cortex, responsible for processing sound information. In each hemisphere, primary auditory cortex is located in Heschl’s gyrus (a transverse gyrus across the superior temporal gyrus/temporal operculum) and contains frequency-specific bands arranged tonotopically, representing inputs from both ears. In the usually left hemisphere, it includes Wernicke’s area, and auditory association cortex lies adjacent in the superior temporal gyrus. It connects with structures such as the inferior colliculus and medial geniculate nucleus.
