Auditory masking occurs when one sound (the masking stimulus) obscures another (the test stimulus), raising the test stimulus’s absolute threshold or reducing its perceived loudness. Masking can be forward (masker before), simultaneous (together), or backward (masker after), and forward/backward masking can occur when the masker is within about 100 milliseconds of the test sound; related ideas include central masking and critical bands.
