In psychoanalysis, auto-erotism is early-infant behaviour in which an instinct is satisfied without using an external instinctual object. The term was used by Havelock Ellis (1859–1939) in 1898, defining it as sexual emotion arising without an external stimulus from another person. It is also called auto-eroticism and is linked with allo-erotism and narcissism.
