Autocorrelation is the correlation between values in a time series and the same series shifted by a fixed lag. For example, daily migraine ratings can be correlated with ratings from one day earlier (first-order autocorrelation), and such autocorrelations tend to be positive when today’s score predicts tomorrow’s. Correlations with scores two days apart form second-order autocorrelation, and so on; it relates to autoregression and correlograms.
