The autokinetic effect (autokinetic phenomenon/illusion; AKI) is the apparent motion of a stationary point of light viewed in total darkness, arising from physiological nystagmus that the visual system cannot fully correct without a visible frame of reference. The term was coined in 1887 by Hermann Aubert, combining “self” with motion-related roots.
