In psychoanalysis, automatic anxiety is the infant’s subjective feeling of helplessness rooted in biological helplessness, experienced as anxiety, and later reproduced in older individuals when they face situations that are hard to cope with. Freud introduced the concept in Inhibitions, Symptoms and Anxiety (1926).
