Automatic processing is involuntary, non-conscious information processing seen in highly practiced activities such as seeing, reading, cycling, playing games, or driving. Compared with controlled processing, it is faster, requires less effort, is more resistant to fatigue and alcohol, and can support more parallel processing across sensory channels; however, it takes much longer practice to develop, and once established it is harder to control. The Stroop effect vividly illustrates it. It is also called automaticity, preconscious processing, or pre-attentive processing, and connects with many related ideas including mindlessness, top-down processing, and the principle of least effort.
