Autonoetic means “self-knowing” and is used for the kind of consciousness tied to personally experienced events. Endel Tulving (born 1927) argued in 1985 that not all knowledge is autonoetic because a person may know facts about an event (when/where it happened) without having the subjective re-experiencing characteristic of episodic memory; knowing one’s birth facts without remembering birth is a common example. Autonoetic consciousness therefore involves mental time travel and subjective re-living.
