Ballism is a neurological movement disorder characterized by violent, involuntary, and large-amplitude flinging movements of the limbs, often described as throwing or ballistic motions. The condition most commonly arises from damage to the subthalamic nucleus, a structure involved in regulating motor control within the basal ganglia system. These movements are abrupt, forceful, and exhausting, frequently interfering with voluntary action and daily functioning. When ballism affects only one side of the body, the condition is referred to as hemiballism. The disorder illustrates the delicate balance of excitatory and inhibitory processes required for smooth, coordinated movement.
