The Barnum effect is a cognitive bias in which individuals readily accept vague, general personality descriptions as uniquely accurate representations of themselves. Because such descriptions are broad enough to apply to most people, individuals tend to focus on elements that seem personally meaningful while ignoring inconsistencies. This effect explains the persuasive appeal of horoscopes, personality tests, and fortune-telling practices and illustrates the interaction between self-perception and suggestibility.
