KembaraXtra-Psychology – Barognosis

Barognosis refers to the sensory ability to perceive and evaluate the weight of objects through tactile and proprioceptive information, without relying on visual cues. This capacity depends on the integrated functioning of mechanoreceptors in the skin, muscle spindles, joint receptors, and higher somatosensory cortical areas that interpret pressure and muscular effort. When lifting or holding an object, the nervous system compares the force required with prior sensory expectations to determine relative heaviness. Impairment of barognosis may occur following neurological damage affecting the parietal lobe or somatosensory pathways and can be detected clinically when individuals are unable to accurately distinguish differences in weight between objects of similar size. The concept illustrates how perception of physical properties such as weight is not merely mechanical but involves complex neural processing and sensory integration.
