A baroreceptor is a specialized pressure-sensitive sensory receptor located primarily in the walls of major blood vessels, such as the carotid sinus and aortic arch, as well as in the right atrium of the heart. These receptors continuously monitor changes in blood pressure and blood volume by detecting the degree of stretch in vessel walls. When blood pressure drops, baroreceptors send neural signals to the brainstem and hypothalamus, initiating compensatory responses such as increased heart rate, vasoconstriction, and hormonal adjustments including the release of angiotensin II, which also stimulates thirst. Conversely, elevated pressure triggers inhibitory signals that help reduce cardiovascular strain. Through this feedback mechanism, baroreceptors play a critical role in maintaining homeostasis and stabilizing circulation under changing physiological conditions.
