The basal ganglia are a group of interconnected subcortical nuclei located deep within the cerebral hemispheres and around the thalamus, primarily involved in the regulation and coordination of voluntary movement. Key components include the caudate nucleus, putamen, globus pallidus, subthalamic nucleus, and substantia nigra. Beyond motor control, the basal ganglia contribute to habit formation, procedural learning, emotional regulation, and reward processing. Dysfunction in these structures is linked to movement disorders such as Parkinson’s disease, Huntington’s disease, dystonia, chorea, and tremor. Their complex circuitry demonstrates how motor behavior depends on finely balanced excitatory and inhibitory neural loops.
