In chemistry, a base is an alkaline substance that reacts with an acid to form a salt and water, whereas in biochemistry the term often refers to the nitrogenous bases that constitute DNA and RNA, including adenine, cytosine, guanine, thymine, and uracil. In biological contexts more broadly, the base of an organ refers to the portion closest to its point of attachment. More generally still, the word “base” may denote the foundational or supporting element of a structure or system. Across disciplines, the concept emphasizes structural or functional grounding.
