The basilar membrane is a key structure within the cochlea of the inner ear and forms part of the organ of Corti. It supports hair cells that convert mechanical vibrations caused by sound waves into neural impulses transmitted to the brain. The membrane varies in stiffness and width along its length, allowing different regions to respond preferentially to different sound frequencies, a principle central to place theory of hearing. Through this mechanical tuning process, the basilar membrane plays a crucial role in auditory perception and frequency discrimination.
