The Baskerville effect refers to death or severe physiological collapse triggered directly by extreme psychological stress or fear. The term was coined following research showing increased mortality among certain populations on culturally significant “unlucky” dates, suggesting that belief and expectation alone can produce fatal physiological consequences. This phenomenon is closely related to concepts such as the nocebo effect and so-called voodoo death, illustrating the powerful interaction between cognition, emotion, and bodily functioning.
