Behaviour contrast describes a phenomenon in which a change in reinforcement conditions alters response rates relative to prior expectations. When a previously small reward is increased, responding may exceed levels seen under consistently high reward conditions; conversely, reducing a large reward may suppress responding below baseline expectations.
