KembaraXtra – Psychology: Cloze Procedure

Definition

The cloze procedure is a method for assessing reading comprehension, language proficiency, or contextual prediction by deleting words from a passage and asking the reader to supply the missing items. Words may be removed at fixed intervals or selected according to particular linguistic criteria. Successful completion requires the reader to use grammar, vocabulary, background knowledge, and the meaning of the surrounding text. The method is named by analogy with the Gestalt principle of closure, because the reader completes an incomplete pattern.

Cognitive Mechanism

To fill a blank correctly, the reader must integrate information from nearby words with broader sentence and passage meaning. Some blanks can be solved mainly through syntax, while others require semantic understanding or knowledge of the topic. The procedure therefore draws on working memory, lexical access, prediction, and inferential reasoning. Performance tends to improve when the text is familiar, coherent, and suited to the reader’s language level.

Role in Psychology and Psycholinguistics

Cloze tasks are useful for studying how readers anticipate upcoming words and construct meaning from incomplete information. Psycholinguistic research uses them to estimate word predictability, contextual constraint, and language-processing efficiency. In education, cloze performance can indicate whether a text is appropriately difficult and whether a learner understands its structure and content. The task also reveals that reading is an active predictive process rather than a simple sequence of word identifications.

Research and Educational Applications

Cloze procedures are used in literacy assessment, second-language testing, readability research, and experimental studies of comprehension. Scoring may require the exact deleted word or may accept any grammatically and semantically suitable alternative. Different deletion rules can produce tasks with very different levels of difficulty, so interpretation depends on how the test was constructed. Cloze measures are most informative when combined with other assessments of vocabulary, decoding, and comprehension.

Summary

The cloze procedure assesses a person’s ability to reconstruct missing words from linguistic context. It draws on grammar, vocabulary, prediction, memory, and understanding of the passage as a whole. The method is widely used in educational psychology and psycholinguistics. Its effectiveness depends on appropriate text selection, deletion rules, and scoring criteria.
