KembaraXtra – Psychology: Compulsive Personality
Definition
Compulsive personality is an older term referring to what is now classified as obsessive–compulsive personality disorder. It describes a long-standing personality pattern characterized by excessive perfectionism, orderliness, conscientiousness, control, and preoccupation with rules and details.
Personality Characteristics
Individuals with this personality pattern often value precision, productivity, organization, and responsibility to an extreme degree. They may have difficulty delegating tasks, tolerate uncertainty poorly, and become distressed when plans are disrupted. Unlike people with obsessive–compulsive disorder, they do not necessarily experience intrusive obsessions or perform anxiety-driven compulsions.
Role in Personality Psychology
Obsessive–compulsive personality disorder belongs to the group of personality disorders characterized by enduring patterns of thinking, feeling, and behaving that differ markedly from cultural expectations and cause impairment or interpersonal difficulty. Traits associated with conscientiousness may be adaptive in moderation but become problematic when excessively rigid or inflexible.
Clinical Significance
Assessment focuses on long-term personality style rather than isolated symptoms. Treatment often involves psychotherapy aimed at increasing cognitive flexibility, improving emotional awareness, reducing perfectionism, and strengthening interpersonal functioning. Progress is typically gradual because the personality traits are deeply established and often viewed by the individual as appropriate or desirable.
Summary
Compulsive personality is the historical term for obsessive–compulsive personality disorder. It is characterized by rigid perfectionism, excessive control, and preoccupation with order rather than anxiety-driven rituals. The condition differs fundamentally from obsessive–compulsive disorder despite the similarity in names. Contemporary diagnosis uses the modern personality-disorder terminology.
