KembaraXtra – Psychology: Concordance
Definition
Concordance refers generally to agreement or similarity. In genetics, it is the extent to which both members of a pair of relatives, especially twins, share the same trait or diagnosis. In statistics, it refers to agreement between rankings or ordered observations.
Genetic Concordance
A concordance rate is the proportion of twin pairs or other relative pairs in which both individuals show the characteristic of interest. Higher concordance among monozygotic twins than among dizygotic twins may suggest genetic influence. However, concordance below 100 per cent indicates that genes alone do not fully determine the outcome.
Statistical Concordance
In rank statistics, concordance occurs when two variables order a pair of observations in the same direction. Measures such as Kendall’s tau, Kendall’s coefficient of concordance, gamma, and Somers’ D quantify different forms of agreement. These methods are useful when data are ordinal rather than continuous.
Research Significance and Limitations
Genetic concordance must be interpreted in light of shared environments, diagnostic accuracy, sampling, and gene–environment interaction. Statistical concordance measures also differ in how they handle ties and sample structure. Agreement indicates association, not necessarily causation.
Summary
Concordance means agreement or shared occurrence. In genetics, it describes the extent to which relatives share a trait. In statistics, it describes agreement between rankings. Interpretation requires attention to environmental effects, measurement, and the particular statistic used.
