Definition

A conditioned stimulus, abbreviated CS, is a stimulus that initially does not reliably elicit a particular response but acquires that ability through association with an unconditioned stimulus. A tone, light, location, smell, or other cue can become a conditioned stimulus if it predicts a biologically or psychologically significant event.


Conditioning Process

During classical conditioning, the initially neutral stimulus is paired with an unconditioned stimulus, such as food or an aversive event. As learning develops, the neutral cue gains predictive significance. It can then elicit a conditioned response even when the unconditioned stimulus is not presented.


Role in Associative Learning

The effectiveness of a conditioned stimulus depends on more than repeated pairing. Learning is especially strong when the stimulus reliably predicts the unconditioned stimulus and provides new information. Timing, salience, novelty, biological relevance, and prior learning all influence whether conditioning occurs.


Clinical and Applied Significance

Conditioned stimuli play major roles in fear, addiction, appetite, placebo effects, and emotional memory. A place associated with panic may later trigger anxiety, while drug-related cues may evoke craving. Treatments such as exposure therapy seek to weaken maladaptive responses and build new learning about the safety of conditioned cues.
