Definition

The cone of confusion is a cone-shaped region of space surrounding the head in which different sound-source locations produce nearly identical binaural cues. Because the sounds reach the two ears with essentially the same interaural time differences and interaural level differences, the auditory system cannot reliably distinguish among these locations using binaural information alone.


Auditory Mechanism

When a sound originates from any point on the same cone of confusion, it creates similar differences in arrival time and sound intensity at the left and right ears. Since these binaural cues are almost identical, the brain cannot determine the exact location of the sound from them alone. As a result, sounds coming from different positions on the cone may be perceived as originating from the same direction.


Role in Auditory Perception

The cone of confusion illustrates an important limitation of binaural hearing. To overcome this ambiguity, listeners rely on additional cues, including spectral filtering by the outer ear, slight head movements, and visual information.
