Researchers begin with a theoretical model that predicts which observed variables should measure particular latent factors. The proposed model is then tested against the observed covariance matrix using statistical estimation procedures. A statistically acceptable fit does not prove that a model is uniquely correct, since different models may fit the same data reasonably well.
