Definition
Conjoint measurement theory is a mathematical approach for constructing scales when objects vary on several attributes. It examines how the values of separate attributes combine to determine an overall judgement, preference, or scale value.
Measurement Structure
The method assumes that people trade off one attribute against another. For example, a product may be judged according to cost, quality, and convenience. Conjoint measurement seeks a composition rule that explains how the individual attribute values combine to produce the overall evaluation.
Axiomatic and Numerical Approaches
Axiomatic conjoint measurement tests qualitative patterns in the data to determine whether an additive or other formal model is appropriate. Numerical conjoint measurement, often called conjoint analysis, begins with an assumed composition rule and estimates numerical values for the attributes so that observed preferences are reproduced as closely as possible.
Role in Psychology and Decision Research
Conjoint methods are used in psychophysics, consumer psychology, judgement, preference modelling, and measurement theory. They help determine whether apparent interaction effects reflect genuine interaction between attributes or merely the way the measurement scale was constructed. The theory was introduced by Robert Duncan Luce and John Wilder Tukey in 1964.
