The ampulla refers to a small, rounded sac or flask-shaped structure, originally named after a two-handled Roman vessel. In anatomy, the term is applied to several sac-like membranous structures within the body. Of particular psychological and neurophysiological relevance is the ampulla located within each semicircular canal of the inner ear — part of the vestibular system, which regulates balance and spatial orientation.
Each ampulla contains a sensory organ known as the crista, composed of hair cells embedded within a gelatinous structure. When head movement causes endolymph fluid to shift within the semicircular canals, the motion bends the hair cells inside the ampulla, triggering neural signals that inform the brain of rotational movement. Damage or dysfunction in the ampullary system can lead to vertigo, disorientation, and impaired postural control.
Beyond the vestibular context, the term is also applied to other sac-like structures — for example, in the reproductive system — although these uses are less relevant to psychological functioning.
