Psychological Term — Anabolism
Anabolism refers to the constructive phase of metabolism, during which the body synthesizes complex biological molecules from simpler components. These reactions typically require energy, often supplied by ATP, to build structures essential for life — including proteins, nucleic acids, and lipids. Through anabolism, the body repairs tissues, promotes growth, and stores energy for future use. This contrasts with catabolism, which involves the breakdown of larger molecules to release energy

The anabolic process plays an important role in physiological development, particularly during childhood growth, rehabilitation from injury, and muscle-building. Hormones such as insulin, growth hormone, and testosterone stimulate anabolic pathways. In neuroscience and psychology, anabolism takes on special relevance in discussions of nutritional status, physical training, and drug use. For example, anabolic steroids artificially enhance protein synthesis to accelerate muscle development, raising significant ethical and health concerns.

Anabolism relates indirectly to behavior and mental functioning: adequate nutrition and balanced metabolism support cognitive performance, emotional regulation, and general well-being. Situations that impair anabolic processes — including chronic illness or psychological stress — can lead to muscle wasting, fatigue, and impaired neural functioning.
