Psychological Term — Analgesia
Analgesia is the reduction or elimination of the sensation of pain. It may be induced medically—by drugs such as opioids or non-opioid painkillers—or produced psychologically through mechanisms such as hypnosis.
Analgesia differs from anaesthesia because general sensation (e.g., touch) may remain intact even when pain perception is reduced. The experience of analgesia provides insight into the brain’s capacity to modulate pain and the influence of attention, expectation, or dissociation on sensory processes.
