Psychological Terms— Amplitude
Amplitude refers to the magnitude or extent of a cyclical or vibratory movement, such as the displacement of a wave from its resting or zero position. In physics, amplitude is typically measured as the height of the wave’s peak relative to its baseline. When applied to auditory perception, greater amplitude corresponds to higher sound intensity, which is psychologically experienced as loudness. Similarly, in light waves, amplitude influences perceived brightness — greater amplitude is generally associated with a brighter visual sensation.
Amplitude may be defined instantaneously — the displacement at a given moment — or as peak amplitude, the maximum displacement attained during oscillation. When the term appears without qualification, it usually refers to peak amplitude. In the neurosciences, amplitude is a central measurement in electroencephalography (EEG), where the size of electrical oscillations across brain regions helps identify cognitive states and neurological abnormalities. For example, low-frequency, high-amplitude waves are associated with deep sleep, whereas low-amplitude waves are more typical of alert wakefulness.
Amplitude is quantified using standardized units such as decibels (dB) in acoustics, which express sound intensity on a logarithmic scale. Understanding amplitude is fundamental for interpreting sensory experiences and physiological responses across multiple domains.
