In psychoanalysis, anagogic interpretation is a method of interpreting dreams, myths, symbols, or narratives by exploring their higher spiritual, moral, or transcendent meaning. The approach contrasts with standard Freudian interpretation, which typically explains such material in terms of repressed instinctual drives—often sexual.
Carl Jung incorporated anagogic interpretation into analytical psychology, believing that symbolic material can guide individuals toward spiritual growth or psychological wholeness. Freud, however, rejected this method as a return to pre-analytic traditions rather than a scientific approach.
