​A cognitive recognition strategy in which the thinker forms hypotheses about incomplete information and tests them against available perceptual data.
For example, in solving a crossword puzzle, a person may infer possible solutions from partial letter cues and contextual knowledge, working through combinations until one fits.
This process relies on both bottom-up perception and top-down conceptual frameworks, illustrating the brain’s capacity to merge sensory and conceptual information to reach understanding.
