In psychoanalysis, the structuring of treatment to reduce the compensatory fulfillment of demands associated with symptoms that the patient seeks outside the analytic context, notwithstanding the potential frustration and distress that may ensue. Sigmund Freud (1856–1939) articulated a principle in his 1915 article "Observations on Transference-Love": "I assert as a fundamental principle that the patient's needs and desires should be permitted to endure within her, so they may act as motivating forces for her to engage in work and effectuate changes, and we must be cautious not to placate these forces through substitutes."
