A notion created by German psychiatrist Kurt Goldstein (1878–1965) to describe the capacity to employ conceptual categories for classifying entities based on their characteristics and to engage in symbolic rather than tangible thinking. This capability is compromised in several types of brain injury and psychological disorders. Also referred to as categorical attitude.
