Psychology Terms - Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)
It is a psychotherapeutic approach grounded in mindfulness and acceptance, wherein clients are urged to acknowledge and accept their current circumstances, including those that are distressing or uncomfortable, without striving to alter, resist, or evade them. The technique, formerly termed comprehensive distancing, was formulated in the late 1980s by American psychologists Steven C. Hayes, Kelly G. Wilson, and Kirk D. Strosahl, and is regarded by practitioners as an advanced variant of cognitive behavior therapy. In 2006, Hayes controversially asserted that acceptance suggests 'happy is not normative.' The technique is commonly denoted by its initials, pronounced like the word "act."
