Psychology Terms - Access Consciousness
Ned J. Block, a US philosopher born in 1942, presented a distinction in the co-edited volume The Nature of Consciousness (1997), delineating a non-phenomenal category of consciousness that encompasses cognitions and representations prepared for controlled processing. A state is A-conscious if it is not directly experienced but is prepared to govern cognition and action, exemplified as a thirsty individual with *blindsight who instinctively reaches for a drink perceived without conscious visual awareness. Representations that could be utilized upon reactivation are not inherently access-conscious unless they are prepared to govern behavior. Also referred to as A consciousness.
