A neurotransmitter released from the terminals of numerous neurons, serving as the primary chemical messenger for motor neurons in the peripheral nervous system, including the autonomic nervous system, and acting as a crucial neurotransmitter in the central nervous system. It functions to stimulate skeletal muscles and inhibit cardiac muscle, persisting only briefly to facilitate the transmission of impulses between cells before being degraded by acetylcholinesterase into acetic acid and choline.
