Psychology Terms - Acoustic reflex
An involuntary contraction of the tensor tympani and stapedius muscles in the middle ears, occurring bilaterally in response to intense noise presented to either ear, stiffens the eardrum and restricts the movement of the ossicles, resulting in a temporary threshold shift and providing protection against auditory damage. It resembles the pupillary light reflex elicited by intense illumination. Also referred to as the tympanic reflex.
