Psychology Terms - Acute stress disorder
In *DSM-5, a *trauma- and stressor-related disorder that arises after exposure to a traumatic event, exhibiting a symptomatology akin to *post-traumatic stress disorder, including *dissociation (such as *dissociative amnesia, *depersonalization, *derealization), but manifesting within four weeks of the traumatic incident. Should the symptoms endure for more than four weeks, a diagnosis of post-traumatic stress disorder may be contemplated. To fulfill the diagnostic criteria of the DSM-5, the traumatic incident must be consistently re-experienced through recurrent images, thoughts, dreams, illusions, flashbacks, or sensations of reliving the experience, or as discomfort when reminded of the event. There must be evidence of significant avoidance of trauma reminders, and the disruption must have persisted for a minimum of two days.
