A biogenic amine and hormone classified as a catecholamine, also serving as a neurotransmitter, synthesized from tyrosine in the presence of the cofactor vitamin C, secreted by the chromaffin cells of the adrenal medulla and nerve fibers in the sympathetic nervous system. It induces an increase in blood pressure, accelerated heart rate, deepened respiration, sweating, pupil dilation, release of glucose from hepatic stores, redirection of blood from the intestines to skeletal muscles, closure of the bladder sphincter resulting in urine retention, and other physiological responses characteristic of fear, anxiety, or stress. Formula: (HO)2C6H3CH(OH)CH2NHCH3. Also spelled adrenaline. Commonly referred to as epinephrine, particularly in the United States.
