It is a hormone produced by the anterior pituitary that prompts the adrenal cortex to release steroid hormones, including cortisol (hydrocortisone), into the bloodstream, particularly in reaction to stress or injury. Also spelled adrenocorticotropic hormone. Also referred to as adrenocorticotropic hormone or corticotropin.
