A word introduced in 1977 by American psychologist James Jerome Gibson (1904–79) to denote a resource or support supplied by the environment to an organism, enabling the organism to operate in a specific manner. Affordances include a surface that provides physical support, an appetizing substance that offers the option to consume, and the positioning of an outstretched hand that presents the possibility of a handshake.
