The conviction of the inherent superiority of individuals within a specific age group, frequently accompanied by prejudice, stereotyping, and discrimination based on age, typically directed against older individuals. Also spelled agism, particularly in the United States. 1. An individual who engages in or promotes ageism. Adjective 2. Pertaining to ageism. Coined in 1969 by American gerontologist Robert N. Butler (1927–2010), the term is derived from "age" modeled after "racism."
