Psychology Terms - Agraphia
A deficit in writing skills caused by neurological damage to the brain's language centers. The principal types are: apraxic agraphia (impaired writing ability despite intact oral spelling); agraphia for numbers (impaired numerical writing, also termed agraphic acalculia); ideational agraphia (impaired selection of appropriate letter forms despite the ability to copy text); orthographical agraphia (impaired translation of spoken sounds into written forms, also known as lexical agraphia); phonological agraphia (impaired spelling by sound, characterized by excessive reliance on established spelling); spatial agraphia (impaired arrangement and orientation of writing on a page); surface agraphia (spelling by sound combined with impaired spelling of irregular words).
