Acquired immune deficiency syndrome, a condition thought to be induced by the HIV retrovirus and transmitted through infected blood entering the body, particularly via transfusion, needle sharing among intravenous drug users, sexual intercourse, or from a mother to her fetus through the placenta. It is marked by the death of T lymphocytes and the resultant lack of immunity against opportunistic infections. Nearly fifty percent of all AIDS patients acquire HIV-associated dementia.
