KembaraXtra – Travel Terms: Advance Booking Charter (ABC)
An Advance Booking Charter is a charter arrangement where rules require a minimum advance booking period to protect scheduled carriers. The entry notes that before April 1973 many travellers crossed the Atlantic using Affinity Group charters, but abuses led to ABC approval under the UK CAA and US CAB from 1973. Later regulatory relaxations produced many alternative low transatlantic fares, leaving little difference between ABC rates and low scheduled fares such as APEX.
